Inside a Dairy Queen, a couple sits at a booth as Gary is about to enjoy the Flamethrower Cheeseburger from the $5 Buck Lunch menu. He declares he is "going Flamethrower today" when the woman asks him the big question: Does he remember what happened last time? In the following flashbacks, one of which Gary sports a mustache, the same question is asked right as he's about to take a bite out of the burger. And, in each of the flashbacks, he screams from the extreme spiciness. Once we are brought back to the present, he simply says he's got the sundae to help him out. One can safely assume that he knows what he's doing.
iSpot Review - July 31, 2015
The thin line that sits between delicious food and a third
degree burn on your tongue when you order Thai food is somewhere between three
or four stars. Sometimes we can be a bit overzealous in our ability to eat
spicy food. Making a proper creative ad for a spicy food item is difficult
because of the limitations on marketing an angle outside of being spicy.
Advertisers can only show so many images of spicy peppers and the many
variations of the word heat before the attention of viewers begins to diminish.
Although generic, this ad still resonates with spicy food lovers due to how well viewers can relate to Greg. Spicy food is always memorable, especially the ones that leave you sweating, crying and pleading for help while you frantically fan yourself and chug ice water. Watching Greg scream from the burn of the flamethrower cheeseburger on multiple occasions is something any spicy food lover knows all too well.
Also, adding a sundae as part of the $5 buck lunch actually helps this commercial's creative, with Greg thinking that things will be different the fourth time with the flamethrower cheeseburger. Sadly, this is also something spicy food lovers can identify with. Thinking you can combat the spicy with the addition of something sweet and cold is a foolish idea, but an idea that is accepted nearly universally and often.
