Russell Westbrook is approached by a young fan who tells him he has a pair of Jordan XX9 Low's because he wants to be like Russell. The NBA All-Star tells him to work hard and to be himself before he is cut off by ESPN analyst Jalen Rose. Rose tells him of the unfathomable odds in order to become Russell. Dr. Sanjay Gupta talks about requiring the same genetic makeup as Russell to match his physical attributes. ESPN "Sport Science" host John Brenkus breaks down the requirement of shooting mechanics. TV host Dr. Phil chimes in, stating that without Russell's emotional makeup, he couldn't possibly match his intensity or clutch-playing ability. TV host Melissa Rivers also adds that he could never match his style. After further bombardment from his mother, professor and diner cook, Westbrook tells the young fan not to listen to anybody and to be himself. He adds that he wanted to be like Jalen. A surprised Rose asks Westbrook if that statement was true, only to be told it wasn't.

iSpot Review - December 8, 2015

Oklahoma City Thunder Point Guard Russell Westbrook, stars in this 60-second commercial from Foot Locker. This star-powered commercial led by the four-time All-Star is joined by an impressive roster of celebrities including former NBA player Jalen Rose, Dr. Sanjay Gupta, Dr. Phil McGraw, John Brenkus of ESPN's Sport Science and Melissa Rivers. Each one is a specialist in their own way, building the odds against the young fan's desires to be like Russell Westbrook. Although each celebrity speaks on the difficulties of trying to be Russell Westbrook, Dr. Sanjay Gupta takes the cake by asking the young fan if he has Russell's mitochondrial enzyme activity, because Gupta doesn't think he does.

With a tagline of "Fly Your Own Way" at the end of the commercial to promote overcoming the odds, the spot is funny, light-hearted and intended to make viewers laugh. But even amongst all the laughs, an important lesson is being communicated to viewers through the young fan as a stand-in. Westbrook tells the fan after a mountain of doubt from family members and celebrities not to listen to them and to carve his own path to being great.
