Leaving behind his bitter, estranged mother and limited options for his future, Ellis French, a young, gay, Black man arrives at basic training with the hope of becoming a Marine. Though the experience of being a new recruit is grueling enough, Ellis must also persevere through additional layers of prejudice and hate to earn his place in their ranks. When pressed for a reason why he continues to fight his way through this system, he explains that while the world is cruel to people like him, if he at least dies as a Marine, he'll be "a hero to somebody." Based on true events from the life of Writer/Director Elegance Bratton, "The Inspection" is rated R.
