Having passed her peak in her career as a palaeontologist, Mary Anning spends her days searching the South England seaside for common fossils to pawn off on hapless tourists in order to support her ailing mother. One of these tourists offers Mary an opportunity to make a bit of extra money by observing and caring for his wife Charlotte, who has become disconsolate after a personal tragedy. Despite the differences in the two women's outlooks and backgrounds, they develop a deep personal bond with one another that transgresses social norms and threatens to alter the course of both their lives forever.
