AARP Services says mortgage relief scammers seek out targets by advertising legal or financial counseling services or combing through local government property records to identify homeowners on the cusp of foreclosure. To avoid being a victim of one of these scams, AARP suggests being wary of mortgage relief services that guarantee to prevent a foreclosure or get your loan modified. Homeowners are also informed of the fact that it's illegal to demand up-front fees to aid in loan renegotiation until a deal has been secured in writing. If a company advises you to stop making payments, don't, or you could risk losing your home and damaging your credit score. Lastly, if you're told not to contact your mortgage lender, AARP says it's likely a scam.
